Introduction

What if you could multiply 97 x 98 in your head in under 5 seconds? What if you could find the square of 85 without a calculator? What if maths — the subject many students fear — became your favourite subject? This is exactly what Vedic Mathematics can do for you!

Vedic Maths is an ancient system of mathematics rediscovered from the Indian scriptures called the Vedas. It consists of 16 simple formulas (called Sutras) that make calculations incredibly fast and easy. And the best part? Anyone can learn it!

What is Vedic Maths?

Vedic Mathematics is a collection of techniques or Sutras to solve mathematical problems in an easy and faster way. It was rediscovered and systematised by Sri Bharati Krishna Tirthaji (1884–1960), a scholar who studied ancient Indian scriptures and found mathematical formulas hidden within them.

The word ‘Vedic’ comes from ‘Veda’ meaning knowledge. These 16 Sutras cover all areas of mathematics including arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and calculus — and they work in perfect harmony with each other.

The 5 Most Powerful Vedic Maths Tricks

1. Multiply Any Number by 11 Instantly

To multiply any 2-digit number by 11, simply add the two digits and place the result in the middle.

Example: 35 x 11 = 3 (3+5) 5 = 385. That is it!

2. Square Any Number Ending in 5

To find the square of any number ending in 5, multiply the first digit by the next number and add 25 at the end.

Example: 85 squared = 8 x 9 = 72, add 25 = 7225. Done in seconds!

3. Multiply Numbers Close to 100 (Nikhilam Sutra)

To multiply 97 x 98: find how far each is from 100 (97 is -3, 98 is -2). Cross-subtract: 97-2 = 95. Multiply the deficits: 3 x 2 = 6. Answer: 9506.

4. Instant Division by 9

To divide any number by 9, use the running total of digits. Example: 1232 divided by 9. Running totals: 1, 1+2=3, 3+3=6, remainder 6+2=8. Quotient: 136, Remainder: 8.

5. Vertically and Crosswise Multiplication (Urdhva Tiryak)

This universal formula allows multiplication of any size numbers using a simple cross-multiplication pattern. It forms the basis of modern digital multiplication circuits!

Benefits of Learning Vedic Maths for Students

  • Speed: Solve problems 10–15 times faster than conventional methods
  • Accuracy: Fewer steps means fewer chances of making mistakes
  • Mental Maths: Develop the ability to calculate entirely in your head
  • Exam Performance: Score better in timed exams like JEE, NEET, and board exams
  • Confidence: Students who master Vedic Maths actually start enjoying the subject
  • Brain Development: Regular practice improves concentration, memory, and analytical thinking
